The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei): A Guide for Travelers

The Path of the Gods is the most iconic hike on the Amalfi Coast. Suspended between the sky and the sea, this ancient trail connects Bomerano (Agerola) to Nocelle (Positano), offering views that stretch to the island of Capri.

While the scenery is “divine,” it is a true mountain trek. Here is how to enjoy it safely and at your own pace.

⚠️ Essential Safety & Equipment

Don’t be fooled by the beauty; the terrain is rugged. Every year, tourists get into trouble because they are unprepared.

  • FOOTWEAR: Ideally, you should wear hiking boots with ankle support. If you don’t have them, good quality sneakers (running shoes) with a strong grip are the absolute minimum. Never attempt this trail in flip-flops, sandals, or city shoes with smooth soles—the limestone rocks are slippery and uneven.
  • CHILDREN & STROLLERS: This is a rocky mountain path with many steps. It is impossible to use a stroller (passeggino). Carrying a child in a hiking carrier (imbracatura) is physically demanding and generally discouraged due to the uneven terrain. If you bring children, they must be well-behaved and strictly supervised. For very active or “lively” children, the high cliffs and steep drops can turn a beautiful hike into a dangerous nightmare.

  • THE “SELFIE” RISK: The beauty of the path comes from its dramatic cliffs. Stay strictly on the marked trail. Chasing the “perfect selfie” near the edge is extremely dangerous and not worth the risk.

What to Expect Along the Way

As you walk, you will pass by ancient stone farmhouses (antichi casali in pietra), vertical vineyards, and grazing goats. The path is easy to follow—you simply keep going forward.

  • Not a Race: Trekking is about the journey, not the speed. Stop whenever you feel the need to catch your breath or take a photo.
  • Compatibility: Make sure your hiking companions have a similar pace. However, since the path is straightforward and very popular, you can easily separate from your group if you have different needs.
  • Crowds & Safety: On weekends and holidays, the trail is very busy. You will almost always find someone nearby ready to help if needed.
  • Connectivity: Mobile phone signal is generally available along most of the route (depending on your provider), and emergency services can be reached if necessary.

Quick Facts

  • Duration: 3.5 – 4 hours (take your time!).
  • Water: Carry at least 1.5 liters. There are very few spots to refill.
  • Sun: The trail is fully exposed. Wear a hat and sunscreen.

Logistics & Getting There

Getting There & Back: Logistics

The Path of the Gods is not a circular loop. It starts in one town and ends in another, so you must plan your return journey in advance.

  • Starting Point (Bomerano): The most recommended starting point is Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola. To get there, you usually need to reach Amalfi first and then take a SITA bus or a private taxi/NCC up to Agerola (Bomerano stop).
  • Starting from Praiano: You can also access the trekking route from Praiano via long, steep staircases. If you are staying in Praiano, ask your hotel for the specific local connection points.

  • The Car Dilemma: If you arrive in Bomerano with your own car, remember that the trek ends in Positano. Retrieving your car can take several hours using public transport (bus connections).

  • Returning from Positano: Once you finish the trek and reach Positano, you can return to your base (Amalfi, Sorrento, or Praiano) via:

    • Ferry (Recommended): The most scenic and fastest way to get back to Amalfi or Salerno.
    • SITA Bus: Often very crowded during high season.

    • Private Transfer: For a comfortable and quick return.

Ettore’s Insider Insight

“I’ve walked this path many times, and my best advice is: don’t rush. It’s not a competition. If you’re tired, sit down and look at the sea. It’s better to arrive an hour later and enjoy the sunset than to arrive exhausted. Also, remember that while the path is easy to navigate, your safety depends on your shoes and your common sense.”
