Amalfi Coast Logistics: How to Reach and Explore the Divine Coast
The Strategic Choice: Naples vs. Salerno
The Amalfi Coast is accessible from both Naples and Salerno. Both cities offer international airports and high-speed train stations. However, if you plan to use public transport, Salerno is often the smarter choice. It is better connected to the Coast via frequent ferry lines and SITA buses. If you prefer a Private Transfer (NCC), both airports are excellent starting points for a comfortable journey to your hotel.
Travel by Sea: Ferries & Water Taxis
For many, the journey is part of the experience. Traveling by sea is the most scenic way to reach the Coast, following the ancient routes of Mediterranean navigators.
Public Ferries: Frequent connections between Salerno, Amalfi, Positano, and Sorrento.

Private Transfers (NCC): Total Comfort
The most stress-free way to reach your destination, especially with heavy luggage or late-night arrivals. Our professional drivers provide door-to-door service from any airport or station, navigating the narrow ‘Amalfi Drive’ while you relax.
Exploring on Your Own: Car, Scooter, or Boat?
If you value total freedom from schedules, you might consider renting your own vehicle. However, the Amalfi Coast requires a specific strategy:
Car Rentals: You can rent a car at the airport upon arrival. Please Note: Driving here is challenging. The roads are narrow, traffic is heavy in high season, and parking is extremely rare and expensive.
Scooter Rentals: A local favorite. Scooters are much easier to park and allow you to bypass traffic queues more effectively than cars.
Boat Rentals: For the ultimate freedom, renting a private boat (with or without a skipper) allows you to discover hidden coves and beaches inaccessible by land.

Frequently Asked Questions: Plan Your Arrival
Should I arrive in Naples or Salerno?
It depends on your transport mode. If you are booking a Private Transfer (NCC), both are excellent. However, if you are using public transport, we highly recommend Salerno. The train station is just steps away from the ferry piers and SITA bus stops, making the connection to the Coast much faster and more intuitive than from Naples.
Is it difficult to drive on the Amalfi Coast?
The ‘Amalfi Drive’ (SS163) is one of the most beautiful roads in the world, but it requires patience and great attention. The road is narrow, often barely wide enough for two cars to pass in opposite directions. You don’t need to be a professional racer, but you do need to be a cautious and humble driver.
Local Tip: If a local driver in front of you slows down for no apparent reason, follow their lead—they likely see an oncoming bus or a hazard you can’t see yet. Always watch out for scooters, cyclists, and pedestrians, and never overtake where prohibited. Be especially wary of other tourists driving too fast; they don’t know the road as well as the locals do.
Is parking expensive on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, parking is one of the biggest challenges. Spaces are extremely rare, especially in towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Atrani. Prices can be quite high, particularly during the high season, and most blue-stripe spaces are reserved for residents. If you choose to rent a car, ensure your hotel offers private parking, or be prepared to use expensive public garages.
Can I take a ferry with my luggage?
Ferries are a fantastic and scenic way to reach your destination. However, remember that many coastal towns are ‘vertical’. You might have to climb many stairs from the pier to your hotel. If you have several bags, we suggest checking if your hotel offers a porter service or opting for a Private Transfer for a door-to-door arrival.
What is the best way to move between towns once I’m there?
To jump between towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Maiori, the ferry is the fastest way to bypass traffic. For reaching hilltop villages like Ravello or Scala, the SITA bus is the standard choice. For total freedom, a scooter rental is the best way to move quickly and find parking more easily, provided you are comfortable riding on winding roads.
Stefano Panella’s Insight: Don’t get stuck in traffic. Unless you are an experienced driver comfortable with tight cliffside turns, I highly recommend using ferries for moving between towns and a scooter for short-range land exploration. It will save you hours of searching for parking!
