Furore

The ancient name of Furore was “Terra Furoris”, because during the stormy nights, the noise of sea was actually loud. Furore is a small town situated in the homonym fjord. It lies down along the beach and the Lattari Mountains (the town can’t be seen from the main road of Amalfi Coast).

The fjord is reachable by the road 163 that links Amalfi to Positano. During the way You’ll see the road going down towards the sea, and there is the wonderful fjord. In this place, Roberto Rossellini, the great film director set the episode “Miracolo”, part of the film “Amore” of 1948. Anna Magnani and Federico Fellini were the main protagonists of the film.

A very important festival of this little town is the Saint Paschal Baylon, celebrated on 17th of May.

Furore Fjord

It is called “fjord”, but actually it is a ria. A ria is a kind of coast with inlets where the sea penetrates. It has been created by the unstoppable work of the “Schiato creek” from Agerola. It is an enchanting place that inspired also Roberto Rossellini for one of his films. In one of the houses there is a museum dedicate to him and Anna Magnani, who has been one of his lovers.

A peculiarity of this the Fjord is the suspended bridge 30 meters high that connects the road Statale. Every Summer in the Fjord is celebrated a stage of the World Championship of Diving from Great Heights. Moreover, inside the Fjord there are the “Stenditoio”and the “Calcara”, two buildings used in the past as paper factory and grinding mills factory.

History of Furore

Furore was founded by Romans and thanks to its geologic conformation it has always been inaccessible. Furore was a hamlet of Amalfi: maybe its name comes from the fjord of the Marina (the part on the sea), where many paper factories and grinding mills factories were. A very important resource for these activities was the water of Schiatro stream that came from Lattari Mountains.

Furore has always been inaccessible: Saracens could not invade it. It was first mentioned during the compilation of the “catasto carolino” in 1752: in this document Furore is described as a very small town, that didn’t have any cultivated lands and with a few inhabitants. The most important resources were handicraft and sheep-rearing.

Furore dynasties

The most important families gave their names to the streets and to some places: Li Summonti. Le Porpore, Li Cuomi, Li Candidi. Li Summonti family moved to Naples at the beginning of XV century. But they kept on giving money each year to a Furore poor girl for her marriage. The relationship between the rich family and the Furore inhabitants have always been good. They brought a gift in Naples to the Li Summonti. This gift was an alive spine lobster, ready to be cooked, as a sign of gratutude.

What to do in Furore
